The event is designed for consultants with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery, providing a platform to engage with peers and explore the latestn advancements.

Justin Cobb

Professor Cobb studied medicine at Magdalen College Oxford, graduating…

… in 1982. He trained in Oxford, London and Brighton.  He wrote his master’s thesis on ‘Prognostic factors in operable osteosarcoma’. In 1991 he was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at The Middlesex. He was awarded a Hunterian Professorship in 1992. After 15 years as a consultant at UCLH and Hon Sen Lect at UCL, he joined Imperial as chair of orthopaedics in 2005

His first grant in the field of computer assisted orthopaedic surgery was from the special trustees of  The Middlesex and UCH in 1992, together with Brian Davies from Imperial. This led to the Acrobot being developed subsequently, on a Link funded grant. With Professor Andrew Amis, in the Faculty of Engineering, he has designed a suite of partial knee replacements specifically for robotic insertion, that minimise the amount of bone removed at surgery. This programme has been taken over by Stanmore Implants, who are providing these custom made implants, for robotic insertion. The pilot study of this technology is underway now at Charing Cross. 

His principal resarch interests are in the fields of :

• the use of advanced technology to ensure accuracy and precision in surgery

• modelling joint surfaces in early joint disease, and the design of less invasive and better functioning devices

• functional assessment of the injured joint and cost utility analysis. 

As chair of Orthopaedics, and clinical lead at hospital, Professor Cobb leads a team of surgeons, investigators and educators training both under- and post-graduate students in surgical skills and the use of IC developed computer based and robotic technologies to improve outcomes. 

Professor Cobb is advisor to the board of Stanmore Implants, a spinout from UCL. He is a civilian advisor in orthopaedics to the Royal Air Force. He is on the staff of  King Edward VII hospital for Officers, and was Orthopaedic Surgeon to Her Majesty the Queen.

 

Andrew Shimmin

A/Prof. Andrew Shimmin is a Graduate of the Australian Orthopaedic…

… Association Training Program and he furthered his Orthopaedic education in the USA, United Kingdom and Europe. In 1997 he became a Member of the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group as a Specialist Hip and Knee Surgeon.

He is currently a Director of their Research Foundation. A/Prof. Shimmin has performed over 10,000 surgical procedures with special expertise in hip and knee joint replacement and arthroscopy, and reconstruction of the injured athlete’s knee. He has given over 200 presentations at National and International Orthopaedic conferences (see link) and has over 30 publications in major Orthopaedic Journals and book chapters.

He is the immediate past President of the Australian ArthroplastySociety (Joint Replacement Surgeons), is a member of the Australian Knee Society and is one of two Australian members of the International Hip Society.

A/Prof. Shimmin is part of design teams for several joint replacement implants used throughout the world and is involved in research around optimisation of implant positioning in joint replacement surgery. He is an Advisor to the Australian Government (Department of Health) on the safety and efficacy of medical devices.

He is a keen sportsman having had an Association of Tennis Professionals world ranking, played A-Grade amateur football and competed in Veteran’s athletic events. Currently, he remains a golfing tragic.

Kerry Acton

Kerry Acton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon…

…specialising in Hip and Knee Surgery.

He was appointed as a Consultant at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 2007 having trained in and around London and completed fellowships in knee and revision hip surgery. He is particularly interested in hip disease in the young, minimally invasive surgery and in uncemented ceramic bearing arthroplasty, he uses hip arthroscopy sparingly. He has a specialised practice in revision hip and knee replacement and also in complex primary replacement including for metastatic disease in the pelvis and lower limb.

Some of his research interests are pursued through projects run at the University of Surrey, department of Biomechanical Engineering. He travels abroad to teach and to demonstrate surgery, including trips to multiple cities in China.

Joe Baines

Joe trained in orthopaedics in Glasgow, Bristol and Newcastle. He developed…

… a special interest in hip arthroplasty and hip revision during his fellowship in Cardiff.

He joined the Golden Jubilee National Hospital arthroplasty unit in Glasgow in 2007, where he works as a full time consultant in orthopaedics. There, he has dedicated himself exclusively to hip and knee arthroplasty. His main interest is hip revision, and in particular, the reconstruction of complex defects in hip revision.

He also developed an interest in computer-aided knee arthroplasty at the Golden Jubilee. He has shared his experience and observations in this field extensively in training courses, lectures and fellowships.

Joe is regularly involved in lecturing to junior and senior colleagues several times a year in knee and hip arthroplasty courses. He has also had the privilege of training many fellows, many of whom have gone on to become successful hip and knee surgeons.

He has published and presented on the subject of computer-aided knee replacement and hip arthroplasty. Currently, he is involved in clinical research related to Vitamin E highly cross- linked polyethene and innovation in the field of acetabular reconstruction.

 

David Barrett

Professor David Barrett is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in…

… knee surgery. He practises at Southampton University Hospital, where he is also Professor of Orthopaedic engineering with a special interest in knee joint design. He also has clinics in the private sector at the Spire Hospital in Southampton and at the Wessex Nuffield.

Professor David Barrett developed his intearest in knee surgery following a knee fellowship at Harvard Medical School and subsequently returned to the Institute of Orthopaedics to hold a lecturer’s position developing his research in knee joint design and function.

Following his appointment as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee surgery in 1994 at Southampton University Hospital, this interest led to his appointment as Senior Lecturer and subsequently Reader in the School of Engineering Sciences, Southampton University.

His research interests into knee joint design has led to a novel and productive partnership with the School of Engineering Sciences between the medical and surgical departments of the University Hospital and the School of Engineering Sciences at Southampton University along with the Department of Computational Mathematics.

Currently, Professor David Barrett has developed and researched the concept of partial knee resurfacing with a new type of prosthesis, allowing some or all of the sections of the knee to be treated whilst maintaining the undamaged natural structures.

This more recent development is suitable for the younger, more active patient with early arthritis. The partial nature of this procedure gives rise to a much speedier recovery and much higher activity potential.

David Beverland

Professor David Beverland is the head of the Primary Joint Unit at Musgrave…

… Park Hospital in Belfast. He received his MB, BCh, BAO in 1978 from Queen’s University Belfast and completed his professional qualifications to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1982. In 1985 he completed his MD thesis which investigated the aetiology and significance of vibrations produced by the normal patella. He had two fellowships, the Sir John Charnley Hip Revision Fellowship (Wrightington, England) in 1988 and the Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship with special interest in pelvic and acetabular surgery (Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Canada) in 1989. In 1990 after completing his training he became a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast. Since his appointment he has consistently been a high volume primary joint surgeon and in 1993 set up a unit to record Outcome following primary hip and knee replacement.

Michel Bonnin

Michel Bonnin specialises Lower limb Arthroplasty- Hip…

He Performs approximately 500 to 600 joint arthroplasty each year and has a keen interest in clinical research, implant development and worldwide professional education. He is past President of the Lyon school of Knee Surgery. and currently President of the French Hip & Knee Society

Nick Clement

Mr Clement graduated from the University of Newcastle and trained in …

… his hometown of Sunderland before undertaking specialist training in the Southeast of Scotland. During his training he obtained a PhD for his work on patient factors influencing the outcome of total knee arthroplasty and a MD for his work on outcomes of elderly and super-elderly fractures.

Mr Clement is now a Consultant at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with an interest in lower limb arthroplasty and hip fracture care. He is the author of over 250 publications and several book chapters and believes that only through collaboration can orthopaedic science progress.

In his limited spare time Mr Clement enjoys spending time with his family and his twin girls Rosie and Abigail, playing golf, and travelling.

Dermot Collopy

Mr Collopy is a busy Perth-based surgeon specialising in hip and knee…

… replacement, revision arthroplasty, and pelvic and acetabular trauma. He is well-respected nationally and internationally, and is a regular speaker on the national and international circuit.

He completed his residency and advanced surgical training at Royal Perth Hospital. After gaining FRACS Ortho in 1994, he undertook three years of overseas fellowship training in the area of hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery, initially at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford UK, followed by a further year at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and finally a fellowship in pelvic and acetabular trauma at Parkland Memorial Trauma Centre, Dallas Texas. Mr Collopy works as a Consultant at St John of God Private Hospitals in Perth.

His research interests are in hip and knee implant design and fixation, and was one of the design surgeons on the Emperion revision hip system, the Triathlon knee system and the AccoladeII hip system. He, together with one of his partners, Mr Gavin Clark, is involved in developing robotics in knee and hip replacement. Mr Collopy is the immediate Past-President of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia, and Past Chairman of the WA State branch of the AOA. He sits on numerous committees, including the AOA Scientific Committee, the COE Committee, and the NJRR Committee.

 

Kristoff Corten

Dr. Kristoff Corten has completed his Orthopaedic training…

…in 2008 under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Johan Bellemans. Assigned to become a staff member of the Orthopaedic department at the University Hopsital Leuven, he completed a one year clinical and research fellowship in joint reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee at the London Health Science Centre of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, under the leadership of Prof. Steven MacDonald and Prof. Robert Bourne. He completed a travelling fellowship in hip and knee joint reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota with Dr. Robert Trousdale and Dr. Arlen Hanssen. Finally, he also completed a clinical and research fellowship in hip joint preservative surgery with Dr. Michael Leunig, PD and Prof. Reinhold Ganz. He then became a full staff member of the Orthopaedic department at the University of Leuven in August 2009 and is the director of the Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Training. His expertise is in the field of hip joint preservative surgery and primary and revision hip replacement surgery.

Dr. Corten started using the direct anterior approach on a regular OR table in 2009. He gradually fine-tuned the approach towards the standard approach for all his primary and revision total hip replacements. When he started with this approach, the surgery was conducted on a regular OR table in the supine position and with the help of 2 additional residents on the table. Over time he managed to standardize the supine approach towards a procedure that can be efficiently conducted with only one resident or scrub nurse assisting. This allowed him to dramatically increase the cost-efficacy of the procedure. He currently conducts over 250 primary THA cases through the DAA per year.

As an academic researcher his main focus is to investigate the functional and biomechanical recovery of patients with a THA. For this research, he received a 3-year clinical research grant from the Catholic University Leuven (KOF grant). In addition, he received a 4- year research grant of the Flemish Fund for Innovation and Technology (IWT-TBM 100786) in order to investigate the biomechanical influence of surgical approach on hip replacements. As the leader of this research project, he collaborates very closely with 4 other Departments of the Catholic University.

Fares Haddad

Professor Fares Haddad is a Hip and Knee Reconstructive Orthopaedic and Sports…

 Surgeon at University College Hospitals. He is Divisional Clinical Director of Surgical Specialties at UCH, and Director of the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health at University College London.

He has presented and published widely on key aspects of hip, knee and sports surgery and continues to lead a clinical research group with interests in hip and knee joint preservation after injury, the genetic influences on bone and tendon, prosthetic design and performance and outcomes measurement after hip / knee surgery and sports injuries. He is editor in chief of the Bone and Joint Journal, and is on the editorial board of The Journal of Arthroplasty, Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons and Hospital Medicine. He has been elected as a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine

 

Richard King

Prof Richard King graduated from Edinburgh in 1995 before moving back home…

…to his native Yorkshire for basic surgical training in Leeds. He completed his orthopaedic training in the Nottingham, and I undertook fellowships in lower limb arthroplasty and trauma in New Zealand, Nottingham and Coventry. He was appointed in 2008 as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, and was subsequently made an Honorary Professor at the University of Warwick. His interests are primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, surgical planning and simulation, daycase arthroplasty surgery, and the management of orthopaedic infections.

Karthik Logishetty

Kartik Logishetty is a consultant hip surgeon at University College…

…London Hospital’s Young Adult Hip Unit and an associate professor at University College London. His PhD at Imperial College London contributed to the development of ceramic hip resurfacing, and optimised training and techniques for anterior approach hip arthroplasty. Kartik specialises in complex primary and revision hip replacement, hip resurfacing, hip fractures, and open and arthroscopic hip preservation surgery. Working across UCL and Imperial College, Kartik’s research group is currently focused on developing i) AI-based technologies for femoroacetabular impingement, ii) automated 3D planning in hip surgery, and iii) reducing the burden of periprosthetic fractures after hip replacement.

Steven MacDonald

Dr. Steven J. MacDonald is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Western…

… University, Chief of Orthopaedics and Chief of Surgery, at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus in London, Ontario.

He is a native of London, Ontario and received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree at Western. He then received his medical degree from the University of Toronto and returned to Western for his orthopaedic training.

Further training as an adult reconstructive fellow was obtained in Chicago, Illinois and in Bern, Switzerland.

Dr. MacDonald has won many awards including, twice the John Charnley award from the Hip Society, the Frank Stinchfield award from the Hip Society, the Insall Award from the Knee Society and the Founders Medal from the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society.

Dr. MacDonald is a member of multiple orthopaedic organizations including the North American Hip Society, the International Hip Society and the North American Knee Society.

Dr. MacDonald has been awarded 25 research grants for hip and knee replacement projects. He has published over 120 papers in research journals in the field of hip and knee surgery. He has lectured at over 200 national and international meetings. His current focus of research includes multiple randomized clinical trials on hip and knee replacements including the evaluation of new technology.

 

Derek McMinn

Professor McMinn graduated from St Thomas’ hospital…

…medical school in 1977 with the 1st Prize in Surgery and the Cheselden medal. After house jobs in London and Kingston he moved to Birmingham Accident Hospital, at the time, the only Level 1 trauma centre in UK for one year. He met his future wife, Jane, a fellow SHO the first evening in the hospital bar and they are still married 44 years later with three sons, three daughter-in-law’s and four grandchildren.

Derek did the junior registrar rotation in Birmingham, then the orthopaedic registrar rotation and afterwards four years as a senior registrar in Birmingham and Coventry hospitals. He spent a Fellowship year at Endo Klinik, Hamburg with Prof Bucholz and Dr Engelbrecht, the best surgeon Derek has ever had the privilege of being taught by. Also at Hospital for Special Surgery NY with Drs Insall and Ranawat and Mass General Boston with Dr Harris and finally in Birmingham doing research. He was then appointed as a consultant to Royal Orthopaedic Hospital B’ham dealing with elective joint replacement plus running a tertiary referral service for hip and knee revision and Dudley Rd Hospital, then the biggest hospital in Europe for trauma and emergency care.

In his elective practice he developed the stemmed acetabular cup with Waldemar Link for DDH and revision surgery. After 6 years of gradually perfecting prototypes, he pioneered the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, initially with MMT Ltd. implanting the first BHR 30th July 1997 and then Smith & Nephew Inc. He has trained approx 3,500 hip surgeons in the finer details of performing the BHR and travelled abroad on average every 3 weeks for several years to lecture on hip resurfacing.

Derek has been humbled to have changed many patients lives by his BHR treatment but through training multiple other surgeons he has indirectly changed an army of peoples lives. He led the development of Birmingham Knee Replacement and Polymotion Hip Resurfacing with Jointmedica Ltd.

Derek retired from clinical practice in 2019 but continues to carry on an active research program and a development program for hip and knee replacements of the future…..

Sarah Muirhead-Allwood

Sarah Muirhead-Allwood qualified in medicine from…

…St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Her postgraduate surgical and orthopaedic training were at St Thomas’ Hospital, University College Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. She was appointed as a Consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Whittington Hospital in London and the Royal Northern Hospital in 1984. The same year she was also appointed as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at University College London. In 1991 she was appointed as a Consultant at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, where she remains an honorary consultant.

Although Miss Muirhead-Allwood was initially appointed as a general orthopaedic surgeon at the Whittington Hospital, she soon specialised in hip surgery. For the last fifteen years Miss Muirhead-Allwood has exclusively performed primary and revision hip surgery, and lectures on these procedures all over the world. She is a member of the British, European and International Hip Societies.

Miss Muirhead-Allwood set up the London Hip Unit in 2002 to provide a fully supported specialised service for adults with hip problems.

Nicolas Reina

Professor Reina is Head of Hip and Trauma department…

…of the University Hospital in Toulouse, France.

His main focus is hip & pelvis surgery. His clinical practice comprises conservative surgery, primary and complex revision total hip arthroplasty as well as trauma for complex acetabular fractures.

He completed his education in France and then travelled for a fellowship in Oxford, UK and worked in Mayo Clinic, Rochester USA for research.
Board member of French Hip Knee Surgery, he is also member of the European Hip Society and the International Board of the American Association of Hip Knee Surgeons. He published more than 150 peer reviewed publications and book chapters and lectured in various international conferences. 
His research interests modern care in hip surgery such as minimally invasive techniques as a tool to return to intense activities and sport after surgery, personalized patient’s care and musculoskeletal system’s ability to adapt to its environment (biomechanics and anthropological variability) related to his PhD in Anthropobiology.

Andrew Shimmin

A/Prof. Andrew Shimmin is a Graduate of the Australian Orthopaedic…

… Association Training Program and he furthered his Orthopaedic education in the USA, United Kingdom and Europe. In 1997 he became a Member of the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group as a Specialist Hip and Knee Surgeon.

He is currently a Director of their Research Foundation. A/Prof. Shimmin has performed over 10,000 surgical procedures with special expertise in hip and knee joint replacement and arthroscopy, and reconstruction of the injured athlete’s knee. He has given over 200 presentations at National and International Orthopaedic conferences (see link) and has over 30 publications in major Orthopaedic Journals and book chapters.

He is the immediate past President of the Australian ArthroplastySociety (Joint Replacement Surgeons), is a member of the Australian Knee Society and is one of two Australian members of the International Hip Society.

A/Prof. Shimmin is part of design teams for several joint replacement implants used throughout the world and is involved in research around optimisation of implant positioning in joint replacement surgery. He is an Advisor to the Australian Government (Department of Health) on the safety and efficacy of medical devices.

He is a keen sportsman having had an Association of Tennis Professionals world ranking, played A-Grade amateur football and competed in Veteran’s athletic events. Currently, he remains a golfing tragic.

 

Simon Talbot

Mr. Simon Talbot finished his specialist orthopaedic training in 2004…

Simon then undertook further training in knee surgery with fellowships in Melbourne (with John Bartlett and Hayden Morris) and Belgium. When John Bartlett retired, he handed over the ongoing care of his patients to Simon.

He performs surgery on a wide range of knee conditions including arthroscopic surgery, cruciate ligament reconstruction, patella stabilisations and knee joint replacement surgery. He performs over 500 knee operations each year, including more than 200 knee replacements and 100 ACL reconstructions.

Simon bases his work on the highest professional and ethical standards. He is a member of several professional organisations including the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Australian Orthopaedic Association, the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association and the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science. Simon is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. He has a strong interest in research as a way of both constantly auditing and improving results and a way of contributing to future advances in orthopaedic surgery. Current research projects are focused on improving the positioning of knee replacements with individualised three-dimensional planning, medial pivot knee replacements and measuring patient function after knee replacement.

 

Bill Walter

Bill Walter is the Professor of Orthopaedics…

…and Traumatic Surgery at the University of Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospital and the Mater Hospital. Specialising in joint replacement surgery for 20 years,  Professor Walter is a member of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and President of Arthroplasty Society of Australia.
Bill supervises PhD students, Masters students and medical students.   He served as Chairman of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Mater Hospital from 2011 to 2014. Professor Walter hosted the International Society for Orthopaedic Centres meeting in Sydney in 2017 and was President of the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty in 2012.  In May 2022 Professor Walter was appointed the President of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia.
Professor Walter’s research is published in peer reviewed international arthroplasty journals and was awarded the 2021 Pier Giorgio Marchetti, MD, Award for Distinguished International Alumnus from The Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City.
