Event details

The demonstration will be focusing on the surgical technique of a minimally invasive Distal Femoral Osteotomy.
Delegates will be guided through the technique step by step via a HD video recorded in theatre followed by a live question and answer session.

Learning Objectives for Minimally Invasive Distal Femoral Osteotomy

By the end of this educational presentation delegates should be able to:

  • Describe the surgical approach to medial closing wedge distal femoral osteotomy
  • List the necessary equipment to undertake distal femoral osteotomy surgery
  • Recognise the potential pitfalls and complications of surgery, and how to minimise these intra-operatively, with specific reference to:
    • Neurovascular protection
    • Management of the hinge point
  • Discuss the operative steps involved in applying a fixed angle locking plate
  • Understand the importance of preoperative planning and how to apply this intra-operatively

Mr Sam Yasen


Mr Sam Yasen is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in Knee, Hip and Sports surgery in Hampshire. He trained at King’s College London, graduating with Triple Distinction in undergraduate medicine and a First-Class Honours for a BSc in physiology.

His surgical training was undertaken in the Wessex region, where he was awarded the Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal in Trauma & Orthopaedics in 2014 and subsequently appointed as the BOA Young Ambassador. He was also awarded the McLeod Medal in Sports and Exercise Medicine in 2014 and is a current Member of the Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine.

He is fellowship trained in Trauma surgery and advanced Knee surgery. He holds degrees in Engineering (Masters – MSc – with distinction) from Cardiff University, and Teaching (Bristol University- PGCE – again with distinction).

Mr Yasen is a university appointed Teaching Fellow, and has a national appointment as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has a broad experience of teaching from undergraduate level to international lecturing and presentations.

He is also the Research lead for the Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust; and Research Fellow at the University of Winchester. He is widely published on ligament surgery, minimally invasive surgery and osteotomy around the knee. Mr Yasen co-convenes courses in osteotomy and ligament surgery and co-hosts a surgical visitation program at his trust, which is an internationally recognised visitation centre.
