Thursday 15th and Friday 16th May 2025, Pavilions of Harrogate

Following the success of the inaugural meeting in 2024, the meeting returns in 2025. A two-day meeting focusing on Fixed-Bearing Unicompartmental and Patello-Femoral Arthroplasty.

Following the recent NICE guidelines recommending UKA as a treatment modality that should be offered to suitable patients; a particular focus of the meeting will be how to safely grow a UKA practice whilst under the shadow of the NJR.

Fixed-bearing partial knee arthroplasty is the gold standard for unicompartmental knee surgery combining outstanding patient outcomes and very low revision rates.

We are delighted to announce an outstanding faculty combining 5 of the UK’s most experienced partial knee surgeons with a lower-volume but very experienced colleague and a recently-appointed colleague (for their unique perspectives).

The five senior surgeons have each performed thousands of partial knee procedures using the best fixed-bearing partial knee implants.

Convenors

Nick London

Nick London is an specialist knee surgeon with more than 20 years’ experience…

… in sports injuries, knee arthritis and knee replacement surgery. In 2018 he was appointed Visiting Professor to the Leeds Beckett University Carnegie School of Sport in recognition of his work with sports injuries.

After graduating from Cambridge University and a training scheme in Yorkshire, he completed a one-year sports knee fellowship in Australia before becoming a consultant in 2000. He has set up and developed The Yorkshire Knee Clinic and is a founder member of the European Knee Society.

Nick believes that the ability to manage all orthopaedic knee conditions from those developing in children and adolescents, through sports injuries in athletes of all abilities (elite professionals to ‘weekend warriors’) and ultimately to knee replacement in patients with severe arthritis is crucial to providing a complete service.

His main interests are in injury prevention/treatment for children and young athletes and managing the young, active patient with arthritis. He works with the orthopaedic industry to develop and evaluate the latest treatments and techniques, has a busy clinical research portfolio and lectures extensively at international meetings.

Dave Duffy

Dave is currently the lead surgeon for acute knee Injuries at Harrogate District…

… Hospital and has successfully treated many professional athletes. He has performed thousands of arthroscopic procedures (ACL reconstruction and meniscal surgery) throughout his career. His approach is directed at diagnosing the extent of a new injury quickly. Being able to start treatment early, especially for conditions where this is time critical, is essential to achieving the best result. The support of specialist physiotherapists, plus swift and high quality investigations help to achieve this goal.

A significant part of his practice is the management of arthritis of the knee and he treats a high volume of patients. According to current National Joint Registry data, he performs almost double the number of total knee replacements each year relative to the national average and more than four times the average number of partial knee replacements.

David Barrett

Professor David Barrett is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in…

… knee surgery. He practises at Southampton University Hospital, where he is also Professor of Orthopaedic engineering with a special interest in knee joint design. He also has clinics in the private sector at the Spire Hospital in Southampton and at the Wessex Nuffield.

Professor David Barrett developed his intearest in knee surgery following a knee fellowship at Harvard Medical School and subsequently returned to the Institute of Orthopaedics to hold a lecturer’s position developing his research in knee joint design and function.

Following his appointment as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee surgery in 1994 at Southampton University Hospital, this interest led to his appointment as Senior Lecturer and subsequently Reader in the School of Engineering Sciences, Southampton University.

His research interests into knee joint design has led to a novel and productive partnership with the School of Engineering Sciences between the medical and surgical departments of the University Hospital and the School of Engineering Sciences at Southampton University along with the Department of Computational Mathematics.

Currently, Professor David Barrett has developed and researched the concept of partial knee resurfacing with a new type of prosthesis, allowing some or all of the sections of the knee to be treated whilst maintaining the undamaged natural structures.

This more recent development is suitable for the younger, more active patient with early arthritis. The partial nature of this procedure gives rise to a much speedier recovery and much higher activity potential.

James Belsey

James is a clinical exercise scientist who was awarded a PhD in 2020 from the…

…University of Winchester (UK) for his thesis around the use of graft materials during high tibial osteotomy and its implications for returning to physical activity. His current research focus is on the optimisation of cryocompression therapy for rehabilitation from knee surgery.

James currently works as a Research Consultant for Physiolab Technologies Ltd and as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Winchester, where he has delivered modules in undergraduate Sport & Exercise Science related to health, rehabilitation, and clinical populations. He received a master’s degree from the University of Konstanz (Germany) in 2014 and an undergraduate degree from the University of Wolverhampton (UK) in 2011. James is also a fluent English and German speaker.

Angela Brivio

I studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan…

…and partly in Strasbourg, where I discovered my passion for Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

I specialised at the University of Milan, with a thesis on elbow fractures in children that I later published.
I took my study to a three-year world congress (SICOT/SIROT) in Hong Kong in 2008.
I dedicated the first years of my career to paediatric orthopaedics and traumatology as my interest in the knee grew.
Thus, I started attending courses and congresses, as well as visiting the operating theatres of distinguished knee surgery colleagues in Italy and abroad.

I was in Berlin in 2015 at a meeting on revision knee surgery, in Knokke (Belgium) in 2016 at the “PKM”, a European congress on monocompartmental (partial) knee replacements, in Oxford in 2017 at an education course on partial knee replacements, in Valencia, in Bruges …

I believe it is fundamental in my work to meet, compare and collaborate with colleagues.

I worked in 2017-2018 in the Department of Prosthetic Surgery at the Galeazzi (Milan) with Prof. Sergio Romagnoli, a luminary in knee prosthetics and in particular in monocompartmental and bimonus prostheses.
I have recently developed a personal smartphone application in order to better accompany my patients step by step through the surgery and rehabilitation process.
In April 2021 I joined the GMC (General Medical Council), the UK Medical Council, and started working with Professor Barrett as a consultant for Knee Surgery.
In 2022, I joined the European Knee Society as a Junior Member and became a Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in July 2022.
In June 2023 I became a Tutor in Knee Course on “Advanced Course on Unicompartmental Knee Replacement” at ICLO Teaching and Research Center in Verona
In January 2024 I became and Active Member Of the European knee Ho attualmente il ruolo di Academic Visitor all’Imperial College di Londra.

I was invited to join the consultant staff at King Edward VIIth’s Hospital as a Consultant Knee Surgeon working alongside along Prof. David Barrett and Prof. Justin Cobb. I practiced at KEVII Hospital till July 2024.
I have been a member of the regular review board for knee surgery at King Edward VII’s Hospital, where all cases are discussed and evaluated.

I have an active interest in research and academic knee surgery as well as the treatment of complex knee conditions. I am actually an Academic Visitor at Imperial College London at the Department of Mechanical Engineering where I am developing some projects about knee prosthetic design.
